2021.10.22 12:02 thavisanimation [SF] The Content Grove
Timmy walked amongst the rows of orange trees, whistling and occasionally stopping to inspect the fruit. Bobby walked beside him, listening to his father’s boots crunch over the dirt, eyes watching the carefree leaps of the farm’s retriever, who ran on ahead and occasionally loped back behind them.
“Good year for the oranges,” said Timmy proudly. He shifted his weight and pulled down a branch for Bobby to inspect.
“Look at ’em!” he exclaimed, “Big as a house with twice the juice!”
“That’s pretty cool,” answered Bobby, only partially listening. Rascal had reached the end of the row, and was sitting patiently on the grass waiting for them to catch up. Beyond the orange grove, the Content Trees stood in the sunlight, softly shimmering in the late summer breeze. Their white trunks and multicolored leaves gave off a ghostly appearance, and Bobby always felt a jolt in his stomach when he saw them, like he’d eaten a large stone without realizing. They both walked to the end of the row, Timmy still whistling his little tune, and together stood gazing at the small, shimmering grove of Content, set back and away from the fruit trees.
Seven trees stood, closely compacted, the ground underneath them moist and dark. Little green insects crawled over the bark of the trees, forming filaments that twisted and moved like long strands of green hair. The trees always looked so foreign after walking through the orange and plum, and somehow looked different from the willow and oak that lined the farm. Bobby shivered.
“Good yield last month from that right there,” said his father, a blade of grass sticking out from his front teeth, twisting slowly as he rotated his lower jaw.
“Yea?” answered Bobby, his attention on the trees.
“Yessir, we scored a big one last month. Got them finally working together on something, takes a few years for the roots to entwine properly.”
“A big story?” asked Bobby, his eyes traveling up the bark of the Content trees and resting on the glimmering leaves of silver and gold, little thrushes skittering among the alien foliage.
“New York Times story,” exclaimed Timmy, a grin crossing his face, stretching his jowls and pulling the skin tight over his sunburnt nose, “information part of the Cancel Culture ecosystem, the most profitable sector.”
“Wow,” Bobby exclaimed, his eyes wide. He knew that meant at least 2 weeks of royalties, and hell — it might even birth new trees. He hoped it would, remembering the big blue trucks arriving on the farm to deliver the trees, the grey workers expressionless as they signed paperwork at the kitchen table.
“Yup,” said Timmy, wiping sweat from his brow, “and not too much distortion work either. They mostly relied on what we grew right here, on our farm Bobby. High-quality facts right from the soil, our soil. Our product stayed in the news cycle for ten days, and spent a whole six days in the top 3 for engagement!” He smiled proudly and wrinkles appeared around his blue eyes.
“Wow,” murmured Bobby, his eyes still exploring the upper reaches of the strange trees.
“I tol’ everyone,” continued Timmy, “I showed them the paper. I knew it would be like this. Nobody trusts the planting process, but once they’re in — boy! We’re gonna be rich, Bobby.”
Bobby remembered when the grey men came to plant the trees. How they had drilled into the ground with cranes, and run fiber optic cable down into the far reaches of the earth. He remembered the trees being airlifted over his head, and glancing up seeing that they were hollow inside. The grey men had worked quickly, grounding the trees, running the cables up and into their hollow trunks, settling them in a neat and sensible grove. Bobby remembered that the trees had been slow to take on their strange shimmering, and how the evening sun had turned them dark and inky, with the leaves always suggesting some foreign shade of gold.
“It’s all about the combination and layout of the land,” continued Timmy, walking slowly up towards the trees, “It’s in how we’re positioned over the SUM. I think we live in a profitable sector, Bobby.”
Bobby nodded in understanding. His father had drawn him the layout of how it all worked once, scratched it out on a napkin at the kitchen table. He sort of knew how the Content grove functioned.
For example, he knew the fiber optic cables in the tree trunks pulled information from some great reservoir underground, which his father called the SUM, but he didn’t exactly know how the reservoir got there.
He knew the trees sifted and combined old information to produce new information, but didn’t exactly know how they did it, or why they were successful at it.
He saw the structure of it all in his mind, but it was hard to connect it to the shimmering wave of those strange, silent trees.
As they got closer, Bobby‘s ears picked up the hum. His father had stopped a ways ahead, and Bobby knew it was because his father also heard the hum. He walked slowly up to his father, and with each step the hum increased. It seemed to grow deeper into his brain, a hum like no other sound he’d ever heard. It was more of a vibration than a sound, and it made the back of his throat tight and the bones in his head ache.
His father stood scratching his head, feeling the hum burrow deep into his cranium, making his fillings hurt. He sensed the great danger in getting too close, and wouldn’t have ever thought of it, although it was certainly allowed. No one there to stop him, after all. Although he had heard stories of people who wandered too close to the Content grove. His sister had told him once that a farm in California had an accident. A deaf child had wandered too close to the grove and collapsed about twenty yards from the first trees. Family couldn’t get to him. They had to call support, who brought the cranes back. Fished the dead child up from the loops of his overalls.
Timmy shook his head and glanced down at Bobby.
“Can we go?” Bobby asked, looking up in discomfort.
“Sure thing Bobby! Let’s go see what we can rustle up for dinner.”
The two walked slowly from the Content grove, the buzzing in their head receding into a quiet hum, before disappearing altogether.

2021.10.22 12:02 sleepy_girl21 Getting Sick during CMIYC
The last two weeks have been ROUGH for me in my personal life and work life and after months of eating in a calorie deficit in a way that worked for me, I started tracking macros ended up living off protein shakes and after 3 weeks of that ended up miserable and binging for a few days this past week
so my eating and workout routines got thrown off which is fine, progress isn’t linear I know but during CMIYC i tried maintaining a medium push for myself, forgetting that my body is in a funk, and ended up getting caught way sooner than I wanted because I was nauseous and dizzy and had to go sit in the bathroom for a few minutes
it’s my first one of these so at least no matter what it was going to be a PR but it still feels bad because I know I can do better but my body just wasn’t having it today
debating going back tonight to try it again, my mantra the last few days has been “be kind to yourself” but I just needed to vent because I feel really defeated, I’ve never been so dizzy and feeling like my insides are going to explode during a class, especially at a speed that wasn’t too too aggressive for my usual paces
anyway thanks for reading if you made it this far, I just needed to vent somewhere people might understand

2021.10.22 12:02 hp527 How explicit is the Throne of Glass series?
I've heard Sarah J Maas's Throne of Glass series is a really good read, but I don't feel comfortable reading explicit sex scenes. I do like romance in a book, just not full on, descriptive sex. I don't mind fade to black or vauge suggestion of what's happening, but I don't really want a play by play of what's happening 🤣 so how explicit is Throne of Glass?

2021.10.22 12:02 freddieh85 My compact stackable constructor setup
Processing img pj9bdro8n0v71...
Was playing around with the stackable floor plans made by u/oldshavingfoam (see https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15CwzP2ru9_DdflXv7FJBjTNks9qxIDM2). Didn't see a compact setup for constructors, so I changed his concrete setup to a compact one (2x3 foundations)
Made two outputs, because I'm gonna use it to make quickwire from a single pure caterium node making 800 quickwire p/m.
